Michael Shonstrom started his career on Wall Street as an associate editor of the venerable Moody's Industrial Manual. He was subsequently at Lehman Brothers as a healthcare analyst followed by a tenure with Faulkner, Dawkins & Sullivan as a Vice President, with institutional sales and research. His coverage included healthcare and consumer products companies.
In 1974, he moved to Vermont and opened the Churchill House Inn featuring a winter ski touring center, and Vermont Adventure Tours involving hiking the Long Trail, cycling back roads and canoeing between country inns. Guided fly fishing was also offered. His inn and trips were featured in "Vermont Life" the New York Times, "Backpacker", "Yankee", "Harper's Bazaar", "Bride", "Money" and many inn guides.
In 1985 he joined First Albany in institutional sales and subsequently joined CL King & Associates in 1988, as Vice President, Director Institutional Sales. While there he helped the institutional department grow from a start-up status to a group of a dozen professionals and was involved in training, refining the small-cap value research product and establishing investment banking relationships.
In 1994, he came to Neidiger, Tucker, Bruner, Inc.; a regional broker-dealer based in Denver, as Senior Vice President, Director Institutional Research to develop an institutional presence for that firm. He founded Shonstrom Research Associates, LLC, in 2000 as an independent research firm focused on early discovery micro and small cap equity investments. This was interspersed with a three year engagement with Emerging Growth Equities, Ltd. as Senior Vice President Research covering stocks in the technology sector. In 2009 he joined Bathgate Capital Partners, LLC as Director of Research. Bathgate changed its name to GVC Capital in 2010.
Shonstrom has been recognized as a top analyst by Zack's Investor Services which ranked him as a 5 star analyst in 4 of the last 6 years and top analyst overall with a 176.5% gain in 2005 and by Forbes.com/StarMine Analytics as the number one best stock picker in the Best Brokerage Analyst rankings in 2004 with a 546% gain on his recommendation of Aptimus.
He has been a member of the CFA Institute and the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA). He attended Pomona College, is a graduate of UCLA with a BS in Business Administration and Columbia University with an MBA in Finance, and has taught business courses at Trinity College in Burlington, VT and graduate level security analysis at the University of Colorado Denver.
